Paraguay

Municipios Amigos logoThe Child Friendly Municipalities Initiative (Municipios Amigos de la Niñez y la Adolescencia) in Paraguay was first implemented in 2018-2019 in four pilot municipalities. Recently, the programme was relaunched for new cities and set to start in 2021. The initiative, informed by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Sustainable Development Goals, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the national strategy for children, aims to create results for children through local planning and budgeting, community empowerment, child and youth participation, advocacy, cross-sectoral collaboration and capacity building of local governments.

The initiative is implemented with the support of a national committee including the Paraguayan Organization for Intermunicipal Cooperation (Organización Paraguaya de Cooperación Intermunicipal, OPACI), the Ministry of Children and Adolescents, the Technical Secretariat for Economic and Social Development Planning, the Coordinator for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (Coordinadora por los Derechos de la Infancia y la Adolescencia, CDIA) and the UNICEF Business Advisory Council.
